Shambles voted most picturesque street

York’s Shambles has been voted the UK’s ‘most picturesque street’ in the first Google Street View awards

The narrow cobbled street is lined with wooden-framed buildings that lean in close to each other, some of which are around 600 years old. And although the street’s name may not seem so appropriate, it actually gets its name from the medieval word ‘shamel’, meaning bench.
